NFA Startle and Surprise in the Flight Deck cover showing a professional airline crew managing an unexpected flight-guidance event

01 — STUDY INTRODUCTION

The first response is human

Startle is the immediate physiological and attentional response to a sudden stimulus. Surprise begins when the crew recognizes that the aircraft or operating environment does not match the expected picture.

The professional objective is not to pretend that these responses do not occur. It is to shorten the period during which they can disrupt aircraft control, communication and decision quality.

02 — STUDY INTRODUCTION

Stability creates time for understanding

When the aircraft does not behave as expected, detailed explanation cannot displace attitude, flight path, energy and terrain protection. Stable flight gives the crew the capacity to identify reliable information and use the approved procedure.

The study shows how PF and PM turn two perspectives into one verified operational picture.

03 — STUDY INTRODUCTION

Expectation must always be verified

A selection does not prove that the aircraft accepted the intended mode. A checklist action does not prove that the system recovered. A familiar warning does not independently prove a familiar cause.

The protected edition contains 14 chapters, a final operational review, a 30-question professional assessment with answer key, eight line-oriented scenarios, an instructor discussion guide and consolidated official references.
